Decide which player goes on this stick
Two apps do this job on Fire OS, and you install one of them on a first attempt rather than both. IPTV Smarters Pro is free, forgiving, and identical to the version that runs on every other screen you own. TiViMate lays the channels out in a grid by time, the way a cable box does, which is what most people want in the end, but the useful half of it sits behind a Premium license of about $9.99 a year. Both take the same username, password and server address, and adding the second one later changes nothing about your account. What follows installs Smarters, because it asks less of you the first time through. If you have no login yet, settle that before you touch the stick: none of the steps below do anything without those three values.
Turn on installs from outside the Amazon store
Fire OS refuses outside installs until you say otherwise, so this comes first. From the home row, move up to the top bar and open the gear icon, which is Settings. Choose My Fire TV, then Developer Options, then switch on Apps from Unknown Sources. On sticks sold in the last couple of years that menu is hidden until you ask for it: open My Fire TV, then About, highlight the line naming your own stick, and press the select button seven times, until a small message says developer options are now available. Newer builds also replace the single switch with a list of apps, each with a toggle of its own, under Install unknown apps. If you are looking at a list rather than one switch, leave it alone and carry on, because the name you need is not on that list until the next step puts it there.
Install Downloader and grant it permission
Downloader is a small free app that fetches an install file from a web address, which the stick has no other way of doing. Press the magnifying glass at the left of the top bar and type Downloader. The one you want has an orange icon and is published by AFTVnews. Choose Get, wait while it installs, then Open. The first time it runs it asks for access to files on the device, and you allow it. Decline, and the address bar still accepts a link and the download then does nothing at all, with no message to tell you why, which is where most people abandon this page. While you are in there, go back into Developer Options and confirm Downloader has appeared in Install unknown apps with its own toggle switched on.
Fetch the player file and install it
Open Downloader and stay on its Home tab. Near the top is a wide box for a web address. Press select on that box and an on-screen keyboard comes up. Type the address support sent you on WhatsApp, character for character, capital letters included, then choose Go. A blue bar crosses the screen while the file arrives. That file is an APK, which is the Android name for an install package. When the bar finishes, a gray installer screen opens on its own, with the app name across the top and an Install button at the bottom right. Choose Install, wait for the word Done, and press it. Downloader then offers to delete what it downloaded: accept, and accept again on the confirmation, because the file runs to about 40 MB and this stick has little room to spare.
Sign in with your three values
The new app does not land on the main home row, which throws nearly everybody. Press Home, scroll down to the row called Your Apps and Channels, move right to See All, and the icon is at the end of that grid. Hold the select button on it and choose Move to Front if you want it on the home row permanently. Open it, accept the terms on the first screen, and choose Login with Xtream Codes API rather than the playlist option beside it. The profile name is a label for your own benefit and can be anything. Then type the server address exactly as it was sent, starting http:// and ending in a colon followed by the port number, then the username, then the password, watching the capital letters in both. Choose Add User. The stick now spends a minute or two pulling down the channel list and the program guide.
Check it properly before you put the remote down
Four checks, three minutes. Open Live TV and leave a news channel playing for a full minute without touching anything, because a stream that is going to break up rarely does so in the first thirty seconds. Then open a sports channel, which carries far more data per second than news and is the one that gives way first. Then press the menu button to bring up the guide over the picture and confirm it is showing program names and times rather than the words No information. Last, hold select on a channel you expect to watch often, add it to Favorites, back out and confirm it is sitting in that category. If all four hold, this stick is finished, and the same three values will set up the next screen in the house in about a minute.
If the screen does not look right
Downloader shows the keyboard but Go does nothing
That is the file permission from the third step rather than a wrong address. Open Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, Downloader, and check that its permissions are granted. From the same screen choose Force Stop, then open the app again. If the address bar still will not move, the address itself is carrying a stray character. Retype the whole thing rather than editing what is there, because a trailing space is invisible on a television screen and survives every correction you make around it.
The installer screen says App not installed
There are two causes and you can tell them apart in a minute. The first is room: open Settings, My Fire TV, About, Storage, and look at the free figure. Anything under 500 MB will refuse an install. Remove an app you never open, or clear downloaded files from inside Downloader. The second is an old install file meeting a newer Fire OS, which fails with the same unhelpful words. Message support on WhatsApp for the current address rather than reusing one written down months ago.
Nothing new appears on the home screen after installing
A sideloaded app is filed at the far end of the row named Your Apps and Channels, never among the icons Fire OS shows you first, and on most televisions that row sits below the bottom of the screen. Press Home, scroll down past the rows Amazon has chosen for you, open See All, and look at the last page of the grid. Holding the select button on the icon brings up Move to Front. Nothing has failed here, the stick is hiding it.
It plays for ten minutes, then breaks up every evening
A picture that only falls apart after dark and only in this house is nearly always the wireless link rather than the stream. Start by plugging the stick into the short HDMI extender that came in the box, so it sits clear of the metal back panel of the television. Then switch to the HD copy of the same channel, which most sports feeds carry, and watch for ten minutes. If the breakup stops there, the stick is not getting enough bandwidth where it sits, and an Ethernet adapter at around $15 settles it permanently. If it happens on every channel including news, note the time it happened and send that to support.

Will a Fire TV Stick Lite show the 4K channels?
No, and no setting inside the player changes it. The Lite and the older standard stick output 1080p at most, so a 4K feed is scaled down before it reaches the panel and what you see is an HD picture on a 4K television. If 4K is the reason you are buying, the Fire TV Stick 4K or the 4K Max is the one for the main set. The Lite remains a sensible choice for a bedroom television that is 1080p anyway, where there is no difference to see.
Do I need to keep Downloader after the install?
Keep it. An app put on this way does not update through the Amazon store, so when a newer build appears you fetch it the same way and install it over the top, which leaves your login and your favorites where they are. Downloader takes almost no room. If you would rather not look at it, hold select on the icon and move it off the front row instead of removing it.
Can I be signed in on the stick and my phone at once?
Install it on as many devices as you own, because a plan counts streams playing at the same moment rather than installations. On the One at a time tier the stick and the phone can both sit signed in, and whichever presses play second is refused until the first stops. Where two people in the house want different things on the same evening, the Two at a time tier removes that limit. Moving up a tier partway through a term is a message to support, not a new account.
How much internet speed does the stick actually need?
Around 25 Mbps for a 4K feed and about 8 Mbps for HD, measured at the stick rather than at the router. The stick tells you what it is getting under Settings, My Fire TV, About, Network, and the signal strength line there matters more than the speed the household pays for. A stick two rooms from the router on a 200 Mbps line is routinely worse off than one sitting beside a 50 Mbps router.
